Tenderness is an album by Kip Hanrahan that originally was released in 1990. It includes guest work by Sting, Alfredo "Chocolate" Armenteros, and Giovanni Hidalgo. The Boston Globe said the album "blurs the lines between jazz, rock and Latin music with a raw, sensual complexity through this mysterious 16-song cycle". The Philadelphia Inquirer listed Tenderness as one of its "10 best pop albums of 1990".

Kip Hanrahan leads the band, and doesn't really play, but Kip Hanrahan is a forward thinker and an incredible organizer of all-star progressive bands. This '90 session contains spoken word narratives and offbeat vocals, intense polyrhythmic dialogues and guitar solos, blistering sax and unison passages. Hanrahan moves from idiom to idiom with no concerns about pacing or genre clash. His roster of guest stars includes Sting, Chico Freeman, Andrew Cyrille, Marvin "Smitty" Smith, Leo Nocentelli, Don Pullen, Giovanni Hidalgo, vocalists Carmen Lundy, Lucy Gabrielle Penabaz, and Diahnne Abbott. It is not for all or even most tastes, but anyone who can remain on board for the entire cruise will certainly remember the trip.
