Over the past decade, new talents such as Cassandra Wilson, Patricia Barber and Holly Cole have redefined the world of female jazz vocals. Cole's "Temptation", a 1995 Blue Note release, is her musical tribute to the writings of Tom Waits.
On her third American album, Holly Cole turned in a set of Tom Waits songs recorded with an augmented version of her trio; in addition to piano and bass, there are drums and guitar, as well as the occasional contribution from The Canadian Brass and harmonica player Howard Levy. The result puts a welcome twist on the songs, which include numbers from each stage of Waits's career, and reasserts Cole's talent as an interpreter. Standouts include a catchy version of "Jersey Girl," which made it onto a number of radio playlists, and a rendition of "The Briar and the Rose".
This album sounds so spontaneous — many of the cuts are first takes, some done just after a dinner and drinks when everyone was relaxed. There was not a lot of pre-production on this record, which heightens the spontaneous and genuine feel of the performances. This album sounds great, at least partially because of the minimalist approach to the recording.
