Gary Husband has been at the forefront of the international jazz scene for many years. He is that rare breed: a musician equally fluent in expression, and internationally lauded, on two instruments, in this case, drums and keyboard. His "A Meeting of Spirits" is an innovative re-interpretation of the music of legendary guitarist, bandleader and composer John McLaughlin that in many ways demonstrates the totality of Husband’s multifaceted talent.
This album unfolds as a striking examination of music composed by a guitar master and jazz legend through a "pianistic" lens. Gary Husband took on the challenge of breaking down some of the most challenging and complex electric music ever recorded, and distilling its core harmonies, motifs and rhythms, then applying the whole of a grand piano - as both a percussive and melodic vehicle - to carry the listener on a deep and epic journey based on John McLaughlin's compositions. Fans of the Mahavishnu Orchestra and John McLaughlin will find this a fascinating musical adventure - fans of solo works by Keith Jarrett will be compelled by an exciting, younger voice.
