Giacobetti’s music is situated where two aesthetics met and which would be described by Giulio Cesare Monteverdi a few years later as prima pratica and seconda pratica. The Lamentations and Responsories in five or six parts are full of contrapuntal usages inherited from the old style and revealed in 16th-century counterpoint treatises: free (rep. tenebrae factae sunt), simple (lam. i. quomodo sedet), imitative (lam. v. cum exhalarent), in pairs (lam. iii. sanctuarium suum), invertible (lam. i. aleph), on plainchant in equal values (lam. vi. convertere ad dominum), and fauxbourdon (lam. iii. in ecclesiam tuam). The composer’s musical knowledge is also illustrated by skilful use of sound architecture. Giacobetti combines voices in such a way as to create polychoral effects (lam. ix. in tuere et respice) or effects of mass (lam. i. plena populo). The bass part, with its staggered entrances, occupies a fundamental place in this rhetorical search for contrast (lam. iii. ad omnia desiderabilia). The composer thereby established himself as a master of words and joined the preoccupations of the defenders of the seconda pratica through an ideal restitution of Latin prosody accompanied by a perfect match between sense and sounds.
