André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry’s three-act opera Guillaume Tell was first performed in 1791 at the Salle Favart of the Comédie-Italienne in Paris. The opera deals with the Swiss fight for freedom in the 14th century against the domination of the Habsburgs. The story of Wilhelm Tell is well-known.
Grétry’s opera was banned from the programs by Gioachino Rossini’s composition of the same name. In the summer of 2013, it was finally restaged at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège.
Compared to the production from Liège, the one from Les Monts du Reuil has nothing to hide. Instead of a large orchestra, the company uses a relatively small but very efficient ensemble, which is also much better recorded and better balanced in relation to the voices.
The voices are young and enthusiastic both here and there, and if the tenor Benjamin Athanase occasionally reaches his limits in the title role, the soprano Laura Baudelet as Marie and Madame Tell is quite outstanding with a strong and confident voice. In the role of little Tell, Jeanne Zaepffel is a reliable singer.
Hélène Clerc-Murgier’s conducting is gripping and, in contrast to Scimone, she places less emphasis on the comic aspect of the Opéra Comique, making the opera as a whole very dramatic and, due to its ‘revolutionary’ character, also very typical. The rustic and bucolic character of the dances is delightful.
