    Stretching from Op. 5 to Op. 102, Beethoven's remarkable cello sonatas, though only five in number, are richer and more varied than the violin sonatas. Beethoven was the first great composer of cello sonatas, and he remained so until Brahms wrote two at the end of the 19th century. This new recording, the second for cellist Pieter Wispelwey on the Channel Classics label, is the artist's first recording with his newly acquired Guadagnini cello, made in 1760. Accompanied by rising star Dejan Lazic playing a modern Steinway (D), this new set, which also includes the complete variations, sets new standards for these works, both musically and sonically.
