The present recording reconstructs the sound of a Marian Mass in a Spanish convent towards the end of the 16th century: plainchant performed by women’s voices alternates with polyphonic works featuring a combination of women’s voices and instruments, together with a number of instrumental movements.
It is clear from the records of the Inquisition that in many convents of the early modern period music played a far more central role than the Church authorities felt was appropriate. Music in the form of plainchant was already a regular part of the daily liturgy during both prayers and Mass, but it seems that above and beyond this, nuns were also interested in performing contemporary polyphonic music. This can come as little surprise given the fact that particularly well-endowed convents were home to the daughters of high-ranking families who had been brought up in keeping with their social standing and who had already acquired the requisite taste and were even musically literate but, with the exception of services in the convent chapel, they had few or no duties to perform. The resultant performances, which usually took place in public within a liturgical framework, not infrequently developed into public attractions on such a scale that the bishops responsible for these religious communities felt obliged to ban these performances and accuse the nuns of worldly vanity.
