First recording of Jan Ladislav Dussek's string quartets with the Camesina Quartet: they lay unnoticed in libraries for 200 years, but now the Camesina Quartet has rediscovered them and recorded them for the Musikmanufaktur Berlin label. Dussek composed these string quartets in 1806, shortly before his friend and employer, Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia, was killed in battle at Saalfeld. "They are the best that I have written, and neither in the style of Mozart, Haydn nor Pleyel, but in the style of Dussek, and I think that they will attract some attention in the musical world. I want them to be dedicated to His Royal Highness, Prince Louis of Prussia, with whom I am currently with the army against the French," Dussek wrote to his publisher a few days before the prince's death. The quartets are indeed in Dussek's very own style, which is somewhere between classical and romantic and in many ways far ahead of its time. The roots of Mendelssohn's Berlin Romanticism can already be found here, as well as a rich harmony that hints at Schumann and Brahms. The quartets are likely to be an important discovery for the string quartet repertoire. The recording was preceded by painstaking editorial work by the Camesina Quartet in order to produce an error-free musical text from the available sources.
