Homer Louis "Boots" Randolph III was an American musician best known for his 1963 saxophone hit "Yakety Sax". Randolph was a major part of the "Nashville sound" for most of his professional career. From the pensive cover-shot down to the "recorded in Hollywood" liner note, "Boots with Strings" signals a completely different approach for Randolph. The saxophonist's tastes and inclinations had always seemed boxed in by Nashville and the 'yakety' style that made him famous, so, here he abandons the rockabilly, soul, country, and r&b tendencies of his Nashville records for a full-blown easy-listening record.

His horn sounds great, as full and inventive as ever, but, coupled with stock arrangements of current-ish pop hits ("Moon River", "I Left My Heart in San Francisco", and two Beatles covers - "Yesterday" and "Michelle"), this album merely signals the long slow slide away from hot after-hours sessions to the sort of albums his compatriots Chet Atkins and Floyd Cramer had been making for years - essentially karaoke albums with a really talented instrumentalist up-front. "The Shadow of Your Smile" and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' (which completely duplicates the Phil Spector arrangement of the original) sound good when they're on, but this is mostly a futile exercise, only a step above muzak.
