At the end of 2019, Omara Moctar, the Tuareg guitar hero known as Bombino and his acomplices took over the Melkweg stage in Amsterdam to give a lively show that transported the crowd upon an electric wind to a bush camp outside of Agadez. Bombino’s group is reinforced through his guitarist cousin Anana Harouna from the group Kel Assouf and his singer and comedian cousin Toulou Kiki (on Abderrahmane Sissako’s Timbuktu). Omara’s voice is on form and his fingers are nimble as ever. The tracks from his last studio album Deran (2018) are delivered with energy in addition to some specially selected tracks from his impeccable discography. Rock, blues and boogie soaked in Saharan flavours are reeled off by these masters of the bush and desert. Propelled throught he infallible dynamics of these musicians and the supporting choirs, Bombino excels on his six strings, striking and enthusiastic throughout the proceedings which finish with a hallucinogenic solo on Chet Boughassa. © Benjamin MiNiMuM/Qobuz
