The 18 discs Collector's Edition of "The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12" is limited to a worldwide pressing of only 5,000 copies, and includes every note recorded during the 1965-1966 sessions, every alternate take and alternate lyrics. The 18CD edition includes Dylan's original nine mono 45 RPM singles released during the time period, and rare hotel room recordings from the Savoy Hotel in London (May 4, 1965), the North British Station Hotel in Glasgow (May 13, 1966) and a Denver, Colorado hotel (March 12, 1966) as well as a strip of original film cels from "Don't Look Back". This limited-edition version of The Cutting Edge 1965-1966 is where Bob Dylan's Bootleg Series meets Sony's Copyright Extension series. The former is well-known, begun with a splash with a triple-disc box in 1991 that marked the first official release of many heavily bootlegged items and the first-ever release of many unheard gems, but the latter is something of an obscurity, partially because it started out of a business necessity. European copyright laws changed in 2011, allowing for recorded works to enter public domain provided that the owner hadn't published the works in some form, a move that prompted some major labels to rush out unreleased tapes in their vaults just so they could retain ownership. The first of these was The 50th Anniversary Collection: The Copyright Extension Collection, Vol. 1, an extremely limited edition released in Europe in 2012 preserving all 1962 Dylan recordings owned by Sony, and they followed as European-only sets until The Cutting Edge, possibly because 1965-1966 is indeed considered the gold mine for Dylan fanatics. So, to accompany their monumental six-disc box The Cutting Edge 1965-1966, Sony assembled a lavish 18-disc Collector's Edition box, priced at $599.99 and limited to 5,000 copies worldwide – not a lot of copies but far more than the reported 100 for The 50th Anniversary Collection, and produced with considerable care in packaging, particularly when compared with the shoddy entries on the Copyright Extension series. Anybody that listened to the third disc of The Cutting Edge, the one that runs through every take of "Like a Rolling Stone," has a taste for what's here: take after take of a tune as Dylan and his bands work to find the song's distinct voice. To be sure, there are some gems here that did not make the six-disc box – considering how "She's Your Love Now" never became fully formed, hearing all the breakdowns is enthralling and just hearing a thick guitar grind on a rehearsal of "I Wanna Be Your Lover" can provide a jolt – and the very last disc containing hotel room tapes from 1965 and 1966 points the way toward The Basement Tapes (indeed, "Young But Daily Growing" surfaces here, along with other old country covers) but this, by design, is for the hardcore, whereas the six-disc set can dazzle the mere faithful. It will pay back ample dividends if you devote the time, but you need to meet this Collector's Edition on its own terms.
