is an album by American jazz pianist Bill Evans, released in 1959. Eight months after his successful collaboration with Miles Davis on the album Kind of Blue, Evans recorded Portrait in Jazz with a new group (the Bill Evans Trio) that helped change the direction of modern jazz. Most noticeably, LaFaro's bass is promoted from a mere accompanying instrument to one of almost equal status to the piano (though not to the extent that it would be on later albums such as Sunday at the Village Vanguard). It is one of Evans' more up-tempo and swinging albums (the presence of several ballads notwithstanding). Professional ratings Allmusic 5/5 stars Mojo (no rating)

    Track listing

    Side One

    1. "Come Rain or Come Shine" (Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer) – 3:19
    2. "Autumn Leaves" (Joseph Kosma, Jacques Prévert, Johnny Mercer) – 5:58

    Side Two

    1. "Witchcraft" (Cy Coleman, Carolyn Leigh) – 4:30
    2. "When I Fall in Love" (Victor Young, Edward Heyman) – 4:50
    3. "Peri's Scope" (Bill Evans) – 3:11

    Side Three

    1. "What Is This Thing Called Love?" (Cole Porter) – 4:33
    2. "Spring is Here" (Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart) – 5:01

    Side Four

    1. "Some Day My Prince Will Come" (Frank Churchill, Larry Morey) – 4:48
    2. "Blue in Green" (Miles Davis, Bill Evans) - 5:18

Special Note regarding two of the tracks:

"What Is This Thing Called Love?" has a glitch at the very beginning. Apparently it is on the master tape since it is also on all versions of the CD, EXCEPT for the latest Keepnews Collection CD. I suspect that they spliced in something to replace the glitch.

"Spring Is Here" has what sounds like a tape dropout (garbled sound) at about the 1:46 mark. Once again, it is also present on all CD versions that I have. Even the Keepnews Collection CD has the garbled sound, albeit less noticeable.
