Earth-Shaped Hearts draws a musical thread from the minutiae of everyday life to earth’s incomprehensibly vast geological timescales. The texts are drawn from the work of acclaimed Tasmanian poet Kristen Lang, whose words remind us how to be human on an ancient planet.

‘As an avid choral singer,’ says composer Juliana Kay, ‘I have often sung of bushes and briars, primroses and robins, falling snow and northern lights. But I also want to sing songs that that respect the ancientness of our geology, the tiny lives of insects, the conflicts we have within ourselves in trying to live lightly on the earth. In order to re-imagine our relationship with the earth, we must feel awe about our own landscapes and tell our own stories.’

To guide us in this musical journey, Kay has chosen the unusual and captivating combination of treble voices – soaring sopranos and altos, without the weight of tenors and basses – and percussion. The voices represent the anthropocentric gaze through which we understand the planet, and the percussion creates an earthy and vibrant accompaniment to evoke the natural world.
