D'après des enregistrements sonores réalisés par le label new-yorkais Decca Records et édités par Brunswick dans les années 1960, BnF collection sonore propose une collection de dix volumes consacrés au blues. Une série de fichiers audio haute résolution obtenus à partir de la version mono restaurée pour parcourir une histoire singulière du blues.
Cantonné à ses débuts aux paysages ruraux du sud des États-Unis, le Delta blues, porté par des figures telles Johnny Temple dans un style traditionnel, s'épanche peu à peu dans les villes grâce à des musiciens qui lui confèrent une touche d'urbanité, et l'introduisent ainsi, à l'aide de nouvelles mélodies, dans les clubs et les radios. Pianiste virtuose, Peetie Wheatstraw est l'un de ceux qui importa le blues dans la ville avant de voir ce dernier s'affirmer et se teinter de nouvelles couleurs au contact de la diversité du territoire américain. Le blues de Lighting Hopkins se pare de teintes folk tandis que le East Coast Blues de Rosetta Howard and the Harlem Hamfats – originaire de Chicago – s'apparente au swing. Cow Cow Davenport, Johnny Temple et Jesse James quant à eux se rattachent au piano blues, au sein duquel le piano dévoile toutes ses lettres de noblesse grâce à des musiciens de renom. D'autres restent fidèles au blues classique, conjoint du jazz et ne perdent de vue la célèbre blue note caractéristique du genre, à l'instar de Roosevelt Sykes ' the Honeydripper'', Jimmie Gordon ou encore Cousin Joe et son boogie-woogie. À rebours, Lonnie Johnson, malgré une carrière fluctuante, introduit dès ses débuts des sons joués note à note sur sa guitare, un exercice audacieux exécuté à la perfection pource guitariste dont l'influence dépassa le jazz.
