    The accordion lies on the sofa in Richard Galliano's Parisian apartment. It was made in 1963 by the famous Victoria Accordions Company in Castelfidardo, Italy, a present from his grandmother. It has accompanied Richard Galliano like a leitmotiv for these past fifty years. Whether alongside Wynton Marsalis, Barbara, Bach or, today, Vivaldi, that '63 Victoria has always been with him. Richard Galliano can't imagine playing another instrument, because it is an extension of himself.

    If Galliano has remained so loyal, it is because this Victoria has accompanied him whatever the repertoire, whatever the adventure. 'There's no break between Bach, Rota, Barbara, Vivaldi.' The other leitmotiv is the poetry which Richard Galliano succeeded in finding, and then expressing, in song, when he stood alongside Barbara, of course, but also Nougaro and Reggiani. 'That poetic dimension, it's deep down inside me, and it always comes out whatever I play.'

    Yet Richard Galliano didn't set out on this Four Seasons adventure without a certain apprehension. So many versions of it have already been recorded. From the start, there was an imperative necessity: to preserve the string quintet of his Bach recording as the setting which would place the accordion in the real-life situation of a baroque instrument. Galliano remembers that he played excerpts from The Four Seasons when he was an adolescent, and that he wanted to be the whole orchestra on his own. It was a test of virtuosity, but it was precisely that classical setting which was missing.

    Youth, Adolescence, Maturity, Old Age… The four seasons have been the rhythm of Life and Nature since the dawn of time, like a carousel in perpetual motion. Vivaldi composed this work around that eternal phenomenon. Music that is essential, figurative, universal…
    Playing this work on my Accordion, even though it has been recorded a thousand times over, gives me the opportunity, as with the Music of J. S. Bach, to offer an original new interpretation in which the soloist's part appears with clearness and luminosity. I dare to hope that Vivaldi would have appreciated this new contemporary version.
