    Italy’s reputation as the nursery of violinists came under stress in the nineteenth century, owing to the country’s concentration on opera. Even Paganini, for many the greatest exponent of the violin, played and composed in a very operatic manner; and after his death in 1840 only a few fine soloists upheld the tradition. Chamber music, where it existed, was usually heard in aristocratic homes, but in the mid-1860s several influential quartet societies sprang up in major cities and the middle classes began to take a real interest. Even so, it took decades of toil by devoted teachers to bring about the deluge of superb instrumentalists who poured out of Italy after the Second World War.
