Angel Band is yet another fascinating left turn, an acoustic record comprised of country-gospel songs like "We Shall Rise, " "If I Be Lifted Up" and "Someday My Ship Will Sail, " performed with great subtlety and nuance.

Good taste is always part of an Emmylou Harris project, but such a phrase shouldn't connote boredom – even if Harris' voice sometimes has a monotone edge to it. Her purity, even in the face of that, is always present; she presents material she likes to do with heartfelt emotion. What's more, Harris doesn't diverge from a central folk-acoustic-countr y base in her albums. There's something comforting about coming to each of her new works – because they aren't so awfully new and because the listener can expect quality material and musicianship.
Observers can talk about a return to traditionalism in country music, but Harris has been there all along. Fiddles skitter through her albums, along with dobros and mandolins – the acoustic instruments accompanying rich vocal harmonies. Arrangements are simple and clean.

After the exhausting ordeal of making ``The Ballad of Sally Rose,`` Emmylou Harris figured she deserved a long break. But Paul Kennerly, her husband and producer, talked her into a few informal sessions to keep her voice in shape. Months later, they replayed the tapes and realized they`d produced something worthy of a wider audience. The tapes became ``Angel Band,`` an exquisitely gentle record of gospel-tinged country. Much like ``Trio,`` her collaboration with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt, this is a stripped-down, largely acoustic affair that`s a perfect showcase for an incredible voice that just keeps getting better.
