This is the premiere recording of J.S. Bach's Magnificat heard for the first time within its original liturgical context, alongside the beautiful Christmas Cantata.

Dunedin Consort recreates Bach's first Christmas at Leipzig (Vespers in the Nikolaikirche, 25 December 1723); the recording opens with a Gabrieli motet and includes organ preludes and a seasonal congregational chorale.

Director John Butt has given listeners an interpretation that will provide a refreshing outlook on this masterpiece and will show the Magnificat in a completely new light. This recording marks the return of Dunedin Consort's star-studded cast including, Nicholas Mulroy, Matthew Brook, Joanne Lunn and Clare Wilkinson plus newcomer Julia Doyle.

Another bull s-eye hit from John Butt s Dunedin Consort. This newest liturgical reconstruction is of Bach s first Christmas Vespers in Leipzig in December 1723, a rich service that included organ music, hymns, a cantata and Bach s great Magnificat, in its early version with four little Christmas interpolations. There are interesting textual changes, the playing and singing are terrific, and Butt creates a very convincing congregational hymn with organ flourishes. But the highlight of the disc is the Christmas Cantata 63, brilliantly done with such expressive exuberance that it should have had (but certainly did not) the Leipzigers dancing in the aisles with joy at the arrival of their new Kapellmeister. 5/5 –The Observer

My disc of the Week follows the trend of beginning to think about Christmas before we've even made it as far as Halloween or bonfire night. It isn't our fault though this time I promise what else are we supposed to do when a new recording is released of the kind of quality as this new one from the Dunedin Consort, in which their music director John Butt reconstructs for us the kind of sounds you might have heard when Bach celebrated his first Christmas day vespers in Leipzig in 1723… It's an absolute joy far too good to keep for Christmas although if I have my way I'll be reliving Bach's first Leipzig Christmas somewhere in London on the 25th of December thanks to this fine new recording. –BBC Radio 3 CD Review - Disc of the Week

This is yet another astonishing triumph by Professor John Butt and his Dunedin Consort. Scholarly originality is the clincher: a reconstruction of Bach's first Christmas Vespers in Leipzig with the wonderful Magnificat as central focus. Butt uses the earlier E flat version of the Magnificat, one that possesses instinctively richer solutions than the better-known D major version. Its contextual placement within a liturgical sequence encompassing the exuberant Christmas cantata Christen, ätzet diesen Tag, a Gabrieli motet, relevant Bach Chorale Preludes and congregational chorales(courtesy of an augmented congregational choir) is revelatory. The musicianship is exquisite; the emotional impact is immediate. This is world class, and it's made in Scotland.

Leipzig's burghers expected high musical ritual as part of their Christmas Day services, which Bach provided in abundance during his first year as music director of the city's main churches. John Butt and his Dunedin Consort follow their acclaimed recording of the composer's St John Passion with a liturgical reconstruction of Vespers as it might have been heard at St Nicholas Church on 25 December 1723.The results are sensational, on the money in terms of Bach scholarship and outstanding in their musical fervour and richness.Anyone and that could be everyone in need of an infallible antidote to dumbed-down seasonal stodge will find it here. There are so many good things about this recording that it's hard to know where to start. I could listen to Clare Wilkinson sing the first recitative from Bach's Christmas Cantata BWV 63 all day and still be held by her individuality and insight. Everyone involved from the compact vocal consort and ace period-instrument players to the cohort of congregational singers pour heart and soul into their work. The Magnificat performance, prefaced by Butt's full-blooded organ solo, embraces great joy and tenderness, qualities perfectly tuned to the Christmas story. I've heard nothing finer all year.Andrew Stewart- Sinfini Music. –Sinfini Music
