The title track from Jimmy Cliff’s 1975 British album, “Brave Warrior” is a call to arms to the warriors to “bust down every barrier”. However, the singer’s army is not necessarily dependent on weapons, for Cliff is determined to fight the enemy at every level – psychologically, mentally and spiritually. And so, “Warrior” is less a demand to man the barricades, but a call to use every means available to defeat the foe.
Set to a suitably rootsy rockers rhythm, this is a militant number, albeit one that won’t scare off less revolutionary crowds. With the brass flooding above, a sparkling piano line, and evocative lead guitar, the atmosphere is far from dread, and most of Babylon could skank along to this infectious song without fear of reprisal. A luminesce call for equality that welcomes all comers to the battle.
