    French pianist Bertrand Chamayou performs works by Schubert and Liszt, including 'Wanderer-Fantaisie,' 'Dante Sonata' and 'The Fountain of the Villa d'Este.' The 32-year-old musician performs frequently at music festivals and has performed with the Orchestre de Paris, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and other orchestras. In 2011 he recorded the complete 'Years of Pilgrimage' to mark Liszt's 200th anniversary; it received a Gramophone's Choice award.

    “Let the devil play this thing”, shouted Schubert when he had to admit that he himself could not play his Wanderer Fantasy properly. The work is a visionary cross between a sonata, improvisation and variation, based on motifs from one of his most successful lieder, Der Wanderer.

    Liszt was extremely impressed by the Fantasy, and played and studied it exhaustively to rewrite it as a concerto in four movements. Throughout his life he tried to attract the attention of a wider audience to Schubert’s work, through pioneering but seldom played transcriptions of well-known pieces.
