The Great War as I Saw It
    Publisher: Legacy Books Press | ISBN: 0978465253 | edition 2009 | PDF | 304 pages | 3.64 MB

It is said that Canada's birth as a nation took place on the battlefields of the Western Front in World War I. At places like Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele soldiers attacked from the trenches representing home provinces such as Quebec, Alberta, and Ontario, and returned as proud and triumphant Canadians. Canon Frederick George Scott was a witness to the whole of this transformation. A chaplain of the Canadian Corps from the beginning of the war to its end, Canon Scott’s account is a breathtaking and heartbreaking memoir of one of the greatest wars in history, the Canadians who fought in it, and the birth of a nation.

    Publisher: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates | ISBN: 0805847049 | edition 2004 | PDF | 224 pages | 15.53 MB

We begin and end this book with chapters on resistance to the agendas of the corporate and political right. In chapter two, Carole Edelsky provocatively outlines both the problem of and the resistance to the marketing of fear being perpetuated by the corporate and political right. She uncovers how teachers known for their critical, holistic practice are dealing with the current context—a context that she characterizes as the "new McCarthyism." She illuminates how as with the original McCarthyism, this new version too includes witch hunts, blacklists, secrecy, spying, strong curbs on dissent, the loss of constitutionally designed checks and balances, and the key roles played by and favoring corporate interests. Edelsky intervii views teachers who see themselves and are seen by others as critical holistic teachers to ask them variations on this question: How have they accommodated, resisted, ignored, and given in to these assaults on their professional autonomy and on education for democracy? This chapter serves as both an introduction and overview of how the climate of fear is created and how it is being resisted.

An Introduction to Critical Discourse Analysis in Education
    Publisher: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates | ISBN: 0805848177 | edition 2004 | PDF | 296 pages | 1.96 MB

This landmark text is the first introduction to concepts and issues in critical discourse analysis for educational researchers. The central premise is that critical discourse analysis must be conducted "systematically," which means conducting inquiry into the ways in which language form and function correlate with social practices. Bringing together the work of New Literacy Studies, situated literacy, critical discourse theory and analysis with theories of learning, the text is distinctive in providing not just useful analytic accounts of discourse in classroom and other settings, but going on to identify ways in which these forms of language are connected to theories of learning.

Conflicting Paradigms in Adult Literacy Education: In Quest of a U.S. Democratic Politics of Literacy
    Publisher: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates | ISBN: 0805846239 | edition 2004 | PDF | 320 pages | 24.22 MB

This book provides a broad overview of some of the major trends and issues shaping the theories, practices, research traditions, and politics of adult literacy in the United States since the mid-1980s. If anything, these have been diverse, conflicting, and often irreconcilable. Impinging factors—from the global economy to urban poverty, from "functional literacy" to the "pedagogy of the oppressed," from demands for aggregate data analysis to alternative assessment design, from scientific-based educational research to practitioner-based inquiry—have been key prisms through which sharply jarring discourses have played out in this field during these years. The first eight chapters examine these issues through three distinctive interpretive frames: the participatory literacy movement, the New Literacy Studies, and the functional and workforce orientation of federal policy. Chapter 9, Research Traditions, closely parallels these schools of literacy. In these chapters, I adopt a strategy of critical description and historical analysis.

    Publisher: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates | ISBN: 0805848584 | edition 2004 | PDF | 328 pages | 13.6 MB

With this book, Bloome et al. bring to bear powerful, dynamic theoretical and methodological lenses that, through careful discussion and analysis, serve to extend the fields of literacy studies and educational ethnography in terms of both clarity of terminology and warranted methodology….this volume is one starting point to look at power relations in classroom interaction, one that provides an important frame of analysis that can inform many. Through their examination of who does what with language to whom, when, where, how, with what significance, and for what purpose, this book embodies 'thick description in motion' and will be an important contribution to language and literacy research.

This book attempts to explore what these tensions are as writing assessment and computer technology converge on classroom space. However, I can make no promises that this examination of the issues can resolve the tensions. Perhaps no amount of study can resolve the tensions that exist. The difficulties span political, economic, philosophical, and pedagogical spectra. What I hope to offer with this book is the opportunity for teachers to engage with each other and with their administrations regarding how local issues, tensions, and concerns might be addressed.

Technology, used for both informational and telecommunication purposes, is becoming one of the most important factors in the future of health care delivery. One can see the oncoming change simply by surfing the Internet and looking at the proliferation of health-related Web sites. The 7 million Web sites uncovered by the Alta Vista search engine using the key words health care are actually only a fraction of what is available worldwide. Also discernible on the Web are the international, federal, state, and private sector initiatives supporting the development of an information infrastructure for global, national, and regional health care. For instance, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), the American Telemedicine Association (ATA), and the American Telemedicine Service Providers (ATSP), as well as other private groups, are focused on providing leadership for the adoption of health care information technology and management systems. They help shape health care public policy and industry practices through advocacy and educational and professional development initiatives. Mental health care mirrors these trends of general health care.
