'You See Me Laughin' gives interesting insight into the story of Fat Possum and the artists they recorded. Unlike many modern blues musicians, these were men who drank, gambled, womanized and killed much like the bluesmen of folklore. Both T-Model Ford and R.L. Burnside tell their own stories of homicide in this film.
Their blues is raw and owes a lot to the hill country blues tradition; hypnotic bass and an eloquent simplicity which often relies on a single chord.
The musicians of Fat Possum are also special for another reason; if Fat Possum hadn't sought them out, their stories and their music would have been lost. Asie Payton's album wasn't release until after he died. Many of them were so secure living in their own Mississippi communities they never sought fame or fortune.
