Based on the work of Georgia’s national poet Vazha Pshavella (1961-1915), Vedreba is a loosely structured visual poem that follows the plots of Pshavella’s epics and talks about pride, honor, revenge, and mourning. Set amidst the mighty swipe of the Caucasus mountains and making full use of the inconceivable natural imagery of geological forms and unusual architecture, of strong facial features and costumes, of sounds and winds, this is a truly memorable cinema of image creation.
A Khevsur Aluda killed Chechen Mutsal in a decent fight. Enchanted by his rival’s bravery Aluda refused to cut off Mutsal’s right hand. For this violation of the Khevsur tradition Aluda was expelled from his family. Chechen Chokhola got acquainted with Khevsur Zviadauri while hunting in the mountains. He brought Zviadauri home paid him homage and let him stay overnight at his place. However the Chechens knew that Zviadauri was a Khevsur. They dragged him out of Chokhola’s house and executed him near a Chechen’s grave. Chokhola could do nothing to defend Zviadauri. He fought back the kidnappers and got killed in the fight.
This film opens Tengiz Abuladze’s trilogy ("Vedreba" - "Natvris khe" - "Monanieba").

Они гасят свечи в чаше с пивом – ритуальный хевсурский жест, означающий отречение. И только увидев, какие несчастья и беды несет за собой отказ от борьбы со злом, Поэт вновь берет в руки оружие.

This poetic parable is part of Tenghiz Abuladze's cinematic triptych: "Vedreba" - "Natvris khe" - "Monanieba". The place is Georgia at the beginning of the 20th century. Marita, the film's heroine, arrived here to live with her aunt. She meets a poor young lad, Gedia, and falls in love with him. But her relatives are determined to marry the girl off to a local rich man…

This last Tenghiz Abuladze film is crowning the trilogy started by the motion pictures "The Plea" and "The Wishing Tree". In the Soviet Union, the film was put into distribution only as late as 1987, during the "glasnost" period.
The film's structure is somewhat whimsical: the action develops, as it were, outside the time framework, with no specified indication to the 1930s. In the character of dictator Varlam Aravidze, the traits of Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin and Beria are equally recognizable. Three generations of one family are paying for the sins of their fathers. In a totalitarian society, the first to perish are the artists, like Sandro Barateli and his wife. Years later, their daughter, Keti, avenges the death of her parents…
