Microbunny - Dead Stars
Genre: Trip Hop | CD | MP3 | VBR~192 | 82.6Mb

Al Okada used to give new meaning to the term “one-man band.” The multi-instrumentalist (formerly of Guelph groove merchants King Cobb Steelie) created the ambient sounds of Microbunny’s 2002 debut himself through sampling and looping, bringing in Tamara Williamson to lend her haunting vocals to the proceedings. With their new Dead Stars disc, Microbunny is now more of a full-band effort — Williamson wrote her own lyrics and melodies and madcap drummer Sam Cino and bassist Mitch Girio were an integral part of the proceedings. And it shows — Dead Stars builds on the first album’s sonic palette, moving beyond mere studio trickery to flesh out some of Okada’s earlier material into a warm swirl of sound. While close kin Cinematic Orchestra and Portishead share a similar languid downbeat aesthetic, Microbunny steers clear of the earthy and heads straight for outer space. With a song named after a Star Trek planet (“Gamma Hydra IV”) and the epic build-up of the 23-minute title-track, Dead Stars is nothing short of… interstellar.

Dave Gahan - Kingdom

Dave Gahan - Kingdom
Genre: Electronic | CD | MP3 | 192Kbps | 6.29Mb

the soaring epic first single 'Kingdom' (out on 8th October) and the addictive pull of 'Use You', where he scathingly lets loose his disgust with people, and specifically, himself. Meanwhile, on 'Down' - perhaps the most confessional song on the record - he confesses "I feel so old, down on the ground is where I'm bound to end up."
Hourglass highlights include the gospel-tinged 'Saw Something', which kick-starts the album with stealth before effortlessly setting the tone for the other 9 tracks. "That was the catalyst that started the idea to write again," Dave recalls, adding that is was also "the first lyric, and the key to open the door to thinking, 'Okay, I can go here.'"

The perfect companion for a sad, silvery winter's afternoon, Emancipator's debut record Soon It Will Be Cold Enough may be perfect for chilling out to, but it is captivating enough so that it is not reduced to background music. There is little variation between each of these pretty tracks (a violin here, the gentle scratching of a record there, a songstress working her way into a song over here), but that's not the point—the soothing trip-hoppy beats are really all you need. Draw a bubble bath, slide in, and let your mind be… emancipated. - jason m.

Genre: Trip Hop, Downtempo | CD | MP3 VBR~225 | 64.1 Mb

From 1994 to 1996 she released three albums in Iceland, Spoon (with a band of the same name), Crouçie d'Où La, and Merman. But she gained fame only in 1999 with Love in the Time of Science (produced by Tears for Fears' Roland Orzabal). Torrini was able to sing Gollum's Song, the end theme of Peter Jackson's film The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers when fellow Icelander Björk backed out due to pregnancy. In 2005 she released the album Fisherman's Woman featuring the singles "Sunny Road" and "Heartstopper." In 2006, Torrini was nominated for the Icelandic Music Awards held in Reykjavík in four categories: Pop Album of the Year, Song of the Year (Sunny Road), Singer of the Year and Video of the Year (Sunny Road, Directed by Ali Taylor at Sherbet). She won all except Song of the Year. She has been a member of Icelandic artist group GusGus, and contributed vocals to several songs on their debut Polydistortion (1997), most notably "Why", which she sometimes still performs live. She co-wrote Kylie Minogue’s "Slow" in 2003. She also produced the track along with Dan Carey; the two were nominated for a Best Dance Recording Grammy Award in 2005 for their work on "Slow". Prior to these, she contributed vocals to songs on Thievery Corporation's 2002 record The Richest Man in Babylon. Torrini has toured with Moby, Sting, Dido, Travis, Tricky, and Adem.

First off we'll start by saying that Masha Qrella's debut album "Luck" from a couple of years back has been one of the most overlooked albums we've ever stocked - and yet every single time we play it in the office or the shop people stop to ask what on earth it is and how they go about getting their hands on it.

A native of Oakville, Ontario, Al Okada was amongst the founding members of King Cobb Steelie. Formed during university, the indie success of the band in Canada gave Al the chance to experience both the studio and live performance setting. After being with the band for seven years, Al became clear of the new direction he wanted for his music. His resume includes music placement in a HBO film, XChange, as well as a Dutch TV film and TV shows including PSI Factor and Mutant X. A Brian Eno fanatic, a lover of Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch's directorial styles, a respectful mimic of all three creeps into Al's music. For live performances, Microbunny adds a much greater humanizing element to the music with the addition of upright bass player King Kong Girio (aka Mitch Girio) and drummer Reverend Cino Evil (aka Sam Cino). By using a technique of live loop triggering, the band is free to improvise with little constraint, unlike many electronic "live" performances driven solely by computer sequencing or recorded music. This approach earned the band top prize in the CBC 2002 Big Break Contest for Ontario out of 700 entries and a live television appearance on the CBC show ZeD.
