    Equilibrium Thermodynamics

    Equilibrium Thermodynamics
    Cambridge University Press | Pages: 304 | 1984-01-27 | ISBN: 0521274567 | 2 MB

Equilibrium Thermodynamics gives a comprehensive but concise course in the fundamentals of classical thermodynamics. Although the subject is essentially classical in nature, illustrative material is drawn widely from modern physics and free use is made of microscopic ideas to illuminate it. The overriding objective in writing the book was to achieve a clear exposition: to give an account of the subject that it both stimulating and easy to learn from. Classical thermodynamics has such wide application that it can be taught in many ways. The terms of reference for Equilibrium Thermodynamics are primarily those of the undergraduate physicist; but it is also suitable for courses in chemistry, engineering, materials science etc. The subject is usually taught in the first or second year of an undergraduate course, but the book takes the student to degree standard (and beyond). Prerequisites are elementary or school-level thermal physics.

Logic in Computer Science: Modelling and Reasoning about Systems
    Cambridge University Press | Pages: 405 | 2004-08 | ISBN: 0521656028 | 62 MB

Recent years have seen the development of powerful tools for verifying hardware and software systems, and increasing interest in that technology from major companies. Students need a basic formal training which allows them to gain sufficient proficiency in using logic-based verification methods. This book addresses these needs by providing a sound basis in logic, and an introduction to the logical frameworks used in modelling, specifying and verifying computer systems. It provides a simple and clear presentation, covering propositional and predicate logic, and some specialised logics used for reasoning about the correctness of computer systems. The authors introduce a carefully chosen core of essential terminology: further technicalities are introduced only when necessary. Numerous examples are given, as well as a full exposition of a fast-growing technique for modelling and verifying computer systems, known as symbolic model checking.

    Computational Intelligence: Methods and Techniques

    Computational Intelligence: Methods and Techniques
    Springer | Pages: 514 | 2008 | ISBN: 3540762876 | 12 MB

This book focuses on various techniques of computational intelligence, both single ones and those which form hybrid methods. Those techniques are today commonly applied issues of artificial intelligence, e.g. to process speech and natural language, build expert systems and robots. The first part of the book presents methods of knowledge representation using different techniques, namely the rough sets, type-1 fuzzy sets and type-2 fuzzy sets. Next various neural network architectures are presented and their learning algorithms are derived. Moreover, the family of evolutionary algorithms is discussed, in particular the classical genetic algorithm, evolutionary strategies and genetic programming, including connections between these techniques and neural networks and fuzzy systems. In the last part of the book, various methods of data partitioning and algorithms of automatic data clustering are given and new neuro-fuzzy architectures are studied and compared.

Anti-Individualism: Mind and Language, Knowledge and Justification
    Cambridge University Press | Pages: 280 |2008-02-04 | ISBN: 0521880483 | 4 MB

Sanford Goldberg argues that a proper account of the communication of knowledge through speech has anti-individualistic implications for both epistemology and the philosophy of mind and language. In Part 1 he offers a novel argument for anti-individualism about mind and language, the view that the contents of one's thoughts and the meanings of one's words depend for their individuation on one's social and natural environment. In Part 2 he discusses the epistemic dimension of knowledge communication, arguing that the epistemic characteristics of communication-based beliefs depend on features of the cognitive and linguistic acts of the subject's social peers. In acknowledging an ineliminable social dimension to mind, language, and the epistemic categories of knowledge, justification, and rationality, his book develops fundamental links between externalism in the philosophy of mind and language, on the one hand, and externalism is epistemology, on the other.

Human Development in the Twenty-First Century: Visionary Ideas from Systems Scientists
    Cambridge University Press | Pages: 270 | 2008-01-24 | ISBN: 0521881978 | 4 MB

How do human beings develop and function in relation to the human and natural world? The science of dynamic systems focuses on connections and relationships between people rather than on individual actions alone. This collection of engaging, non-technical essays, written by dynamic systems scientists in psychology, biology, anthropology, education, and sociology, challenges us to consider novel ways to enhance human development worldwide in the face of poverty, violence, neglect, disease and crises in our families. Focusing specifically on how to think about interventions and policies that will benefit human development from a systems perspective, this book brings current research into the realm of application and policy. The authors use real-life examples to propose changes in clinical, educational and policy-making practices that will be of interest to professionals and practitioners alike.
