Zügürt Aga (The Agha) begins in an arid, far away village of southeastern Turkey and ends in Istanbul. The film tells the story of an agha (rural landlord) who fails to adopt to the socioeconomic changes because of his conservatism and romanticism. While his friends take advantage of the change and take their places in the new system, the Agha remains wallowing in the past. The Agha’s hopes don’t come true as the collective prayer for rain during the draught remains unanswered, and the political party he has supported doesn’t win the general elections. When he finally attempts to change, it’s too late. He is faced with a dilemma when the village folk immigrate to Istanbul: The Agha can no longer practice his authority and position. He has no choice but to follow them to the big city. Faced with the new values of the emerging economic and social order, he is now destined for failure and retreat. 8th New York TFF
The film which catapulted Sener Sen to stardom is a look at the urban-rural conflict and tensions in Turkey in the person of an anachronistic landlord and the tragi-comical story of his move from his native setting to the big city. COMEDIA. Zügürt Aga (El Agha) comienza en un árido y lejano pueblo del sureste de Turquía (Haraptar) y termina en Estambul. La película cuenta la historia de un Agha (propietario rural) que no adapta a los cambios socioeconómicos a causa de su conservadurismo y su romanticismo. Mientras sus amigos se aprovechan de los cambios y toman posiciones en el nuevo sistema, el Agha sigue anclado en el pasado. Las esperanzas de los Agha no se hacen realidad y el partido político que lo ha apoyado no gana las elecciones generales. Cuando finalmente intenta cambiar, es demasiado tarde y se enfrenta a un dilema cuando la gente del pueblo decide emigrar a Estambul: el Agha ya no puede ejercer su autoridad y posición. No tiene más remedio que ir también a la gran ciudad. Frente a los nuevos valores del nuevo orden económico y social, ahora está destinado al fracaso y la retirada.
