Renowned Polish writer/director Krzysztof Kieslowski continues the trilogy of films begun with Blue and ended by Red. The second installment in the series, this film is designed to explore the universal notion of equality. Zbigniew Zamachowski stars in this dramatic look at a man who, when his entire world is destroyed by his ex-wife (Julie Delpy), vows revenge, only to have the tables turned on him in a very unexpected way. This is the second of the "Three Colors" trilogy "Red" "White" and "Blue"; the colors symbolizing liberty, equality and fraternity. White, therefore, was written around the destructive dynamics of a relationship based upon great inequality. Karol is a Polish hairdresser working in France. He has a beautiful wife, Dominique, whom he loves to obsession, and who is in the process of divorcing him for his inability to "consummate the marriage". Karol loses all of his earthly possessions and is literally driven out of France by his estranged wife. The remainder of the movie has Karol fighting to resolve his deep passion for Dominique with his own helplessness. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0111507/plotsummary)

White is an ironic comedy brimming over with the hard laughs of despair, ecstasy, ambition, and longing played in a minor key. Down-and-out Polish immigrant Karol Karol is desperate to get out of France. He's obsessed with his French soon-to-be ex-wife (Before Sunrise's Julie Delpy), his French bank account is frozen, and he's fed up with the inequality of it all. Penniless, he convinces a fellow Pole to smuggle him home in a suitcase–which then gets stolen from the airport. The unhappy thieves beat him and dump him in a snowy rock pit. Things can only get better, right? The story evolves into a wickedly funny antiromance, an inverse Romeo and Juliet. (–Grant Balfour - Editorial Reviews - Amazon.com)

It's said that revenge is a dish that's best eaten cold, and WHITE suggests such a meal. The very last scene strongly implies, however, that Karol ultimately lacks the requisite dispassion. (amazon.com)
