    Dans les bas-fonds de New York, Les Jets, américains blancs, et les Sharks, des Portoricains sont deux bandes rivales qui se disputent le West Side… Jusqu'au jour ou un ami du chef des Jets tombe amoureux de Maria, la soeur du leader des Sharks. Ils vont cacher leur idylle aux yeux de leurs clans respectifs, jusqu'au jour où une guerre ouverte éclate… Rien ne pourra les séparer.
