Time Traveller, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2010)

Originally written in 1967, Tsutsui Yasutaka's sci-fi novel Toki wo Kakeru Shojo has been adapted multiple times in multiple formats. Over 30 years later, director Taniguchi Masaaki and screenwriter Sugeno Tomoe - working with Tsutsui's blessing - brings the story to live-action feature film for the third time with a continuation of the original story. Taking place 30 years later, the 2010 version of Toki wo Kakeru Shojo follows the time traveling adventure of the original protagonist's daughter, played by the 2006 animated spin-off version's lead voice actress Naka Riisa. The new film takes the new heroine to the time period of the novel, telling an independent story that also adds and references to its source material, making it a worthy addition to the franchise rather than a remake of it.

It's been 30 years since Yoshiyama Kazuko (Yasuda Narumi), the heroine of the original novel, had her time traveling adventure, and she has grown up to be a researcher still looking for a formula that will enable people to travel time. However, a car accident sends her into a coma, and her daughter Akari (Naka Riisa) hears a story from a family friend about her mother's first love in the 1970s. Believing that bringing him to the present might help her mother wake up, Akari follows the formula and travels back in time, except she ends up landing two years later than she was supposed to. Instead of finding her mother's first love, she meets college student Ryota (Nakao Akiyoshi), who decides to help Akari on her search. Along the way, a romance begins to develop between the two, but Akari knows that she eventually has to return to 2010 and leave Ryota behind.
