Orphan Luisa Ginglebusher (Margaret Sullavan) is chosen to work as an usherette at the local 'Dream Palace' theater and live on her own. Nobody seems to realize that she's completely unprepared to deal with the male attention that will come her way. Lu is befriended by a protective waiter, Detlaff (Reginald Owen) and pursued by an amorous older man, Konrad (Frank Morgan). When Konrad offers Lu a lot of money to be 'his friend', she invents a fictitious husband, and when Konrad suggests that he hire could hire the husband and make him rich, the girl sees it as an opportunity to do a good deed. Lu picks a name out of the phone book, and the next morning Konrad hires the poor but honest lawyer Max Sporum (Herbert Marshall) at an exorbitant salary. Lu arrives to try to explain, but Max is too elated that his honesty has finally paid off, to listen to her …
