Columbo is an unassuming, disheveled police detective of Italian descent, whose trademarks include wearing a rumpled, beige raincoat over his suit, and smoking a cigar. He is consistently underestimated by his suspects who, while initially reassured and distracted by his circumstantial speech, become increasingly annoyed by his pestering behavior.

Créé par William LINK et Richard LEVINSON et interprété par Peter FALK, Columbo est un lieutenant de police de Los Angeles qui travaille à la Criminelle et élucide des affaires en recherchant obstinément tous les indices. Son allure apparemment nonchalante et désorganisée, accentuée par son éternel imperméable miteux, dissimule un esprit d'analyse très pointu et un brin d'obséquiosité. L'une des meilleures séries policières télévisées, Columbo a la particularité de présenter le mystère à livre ouvert car le spectateur assiste au meurtre au début de l'épisode.
