De film Spoorloos begint idyllisch: het jonge koppel Saskia en Rex reist per auto door het zonnige Frankrijk, op weg naar hun vakantie-adres. Tijdens een pauze op een grote parkeerplaats gaat Saskia even koffie halen, maar daar keert ze nooit van terug. Rex begint vervolgens een jarenlange zoektocht die obsessieve vormen aanneemt en die zowel hemzelf als zijn nieuwe vriendin tot wanhoop drijft. Het tij lijkt echter te keren als hij in contact komt met een keurige Franse leraar die zegt te weten wat Saskia is overkomen. Voor de destijds debuterende actrice Johanna ter Steege betekende Spoorloos de opmaat naar een internationale carriere.

Sur la route des vacances, Rex et Saskia s'arrêtent sur une aire d'autoroute. L'homme s'éloigne du véhicule pendant quelques minutes. À son retour, sa compagne a disparu. Fou de douleur, il renonce à sa vie professionnelle et sociale pour se consacrer exclusivement à la recherche de la disparue. Après trois années d'une quête infructueuse, il reçoit une étrange carte postale, dont l'auteur prétend connaître la vérité sur la disparition…

A Dutch couple, Rex Hofman (Gene Bervoets) and Saskia Wagter (Johanna ter Steege), are on a cycling holiday in France. As they are driving, Saskia tells Rex of a recurring dream that she had, in which she is drifting through space in a golden egg. She tells Rex that this time there was someone else in another golden egg, and that if they were to collide, everything would be over. She said that being stuck in the golden egg was terrifying loneliness. Their car runs out of gas and they are stranded inside a tunnel. They quarrel for a while, but make up and eventually get going again.
