Grosseto. Elena, una donna forte e volitiva, vive in un grande casale di campagna con le figlie e uno zio anziano, un po' matto. Separata ormai da anni con il marito, il conte Leonardo, ha una relazione con Nardoni, amministratore dei suoi beni. L'ex coniuge viene a farle visita con l'intento di chiederle un prestito e di proporle un investimento comune. Elena, su consiglio di Nardoni non accetta. Anche lei si trova in ristrettezze economiche. Poi un tragico incidente porta alla morte del conte. Al funerale partecipano tutti i parenti, giungendo anche da altre città. È un momento di unione molte forte, soprattutto per le donne della famiglia: forti, coraggiose e allo stesso tempo fragili e sensibili. E per la figlia di Elena, in dolce attesa, non si può far altro che sperare… che sia femmina.
Elena Leonardi abandoned her husband and left Rome. While she lives with her daughters and other relatives in the Tuscany region, her husband dies in a car accident. The grieving daughters blame their mother and decide to return to Rome. But, unforeseen twists and turns prevent that from happening. In the end the family reunites and continues to live together in the countryside.
