Exhumée d'une tombe dans la vallée des rois thraces, en Bulgarie, une magnifique tête en bronze livre l'énigme d'un souverain guerrier au destin d'exception.
En août 2004, l'archéologue bulgare Gueorgui Kitov fait une découverte spectaculaire non loin de Sofia, dans une vallée qui compte une vingtaine de temples et de tombes royales : un mausolée antique inviolé, d'une richesse inespérée, remontant à l'apogée de la culture thrace, au IVe siècle avant J.-C. Près de l'entrée de la tombe, on déterre une magnifique tête en bronze d'une modernité étonnante. Une analyse numismatique permet d'identifier le roi Seuthes III, qui a combattu les armées d'Alexandre le Grand.
Dans les pas des archéologues et des historiens, ce film reconstitue le puzzle pour dresser le portrait d'un souverain ouvert à l'hellénisation, mais soucieux de maintenir les rites ancestraux des Thraces et opposé à l'hégémonie macédonienne. Pour Gueorgui Kitov, Seuthes, comme le roi thrace Rhésos mentionné dans L'Iliade, avait atteint le statut d'immortel à travers les pratiques secrètes dont son tombeau conserve les vestiges.
