Jim Stark est le petit nouveau au lycée. Un jeune homme accablé de problèmes familiaux et brimé par ses camarades mais qui n'aspire qu'à se faire une place parmi ses camarades. Entraîné malgré lui dans un défi de vitesse face à Buzz, chef d'un groupe un peu rebelle, ce dernier y perdra la vie. Suite à ce drame, Jim est entraîné dans une spirale de violence.
