A poco piu di quarantanni, Cal Weaver sta vivendo il sogno – ha un lavoro fantastico, una bella casa, dei figli eccezionali ed e sposato con il suo amore del liceo. Ma quando viene a sapere che sua moglie Emily lo ha tradito e vuole divorziare, la sua vita "perfetta" si sgretola velocemente. Cosa peggiore, piombato nel mondo dei single, Cal, che non ha appuntamenti con altre donne da decenni, e decisamente imbranato. Passa cosi le sue serate libere tristemente appoggiato al bancone di un bar, fin quando non viene preso sotto l'ala protettiva di Jacob Palmer, un bellissimo trentenne molto intraprendente con le donne. Jacob fa di tutto per aiutare Cal a tirarsi su e a vivere una vita propria, cercando di fargli vedere quante possibilita ha davanti a se: donne disponibili, cocktail da uomini e uno stile di vita che non si trovano nei soliti bar. Cal ed Emily non sono pero gli unici a cercare l'amore in tutti i modi sbagliati possibili: il figlio tredicenne Robbie e follemente innamorato della babysitter diciassettenne, Jessica, che invece si e presa una cotta per Cal. Nonostante il nuovo look e le numerose nuove conquiste, Cal ha un'unica cosa che non riesce a cambiare: i suoi sentimenti, che sembrano riportarlo proprio al punto di partenza.
