Dromard, an agent of the French secret service, is charged with recovering a priceless treasure which is hidden in the sea somewhere off the coast of Corsica. The only man who can help him is a former German soldier, the sole survivor of the commando unit which hid the treasure during World war II. However, this lead is soon disposed of by rival English and Russian agents, who are after the same thing as Dromard…

Secret agents from France, Great Britain, Russia, Germany, and Italy are all operating on Corsica, they are trying to track down a former Nazi, the only surviving member of an SS unit that hid gold as well as secret German documents on the island. The story quickly becomes a series of interactions between the agents involved in the search, usually resulting in beatings, gunshots, false leads, treachery, various femme fatales, death, all handled with a light touch. Of particular note is the performance of Paul Meurisse (he played the cruel husband in DIABOLIQUE) as the French agent Theobald Dromard. His character is a bit John Steed of THE AVENGERS, always impeccably dressed, but with a nasty, supercilious edge, his body movement is odd, very stylized, you can't take your eyes off him. I greatly enjoyed the first of the "monocle" films (LE MONOCLE NOIR) as the story was so unique, but this one works well enough as a satire of the spy genre. Director Georges Lautner keeps the film moving along for the most part, but it does drag a bit during a couple of extended dialogue sequences that have no particular reason to run on as they do.

IMDb
In 1943, a German commando dissimulates a large quantity of gold in an undersea cave on the coast of Corsica. Years later, Schlumpf, the sole survivor of the commando, returns to Corsica to recuperate the treasure – with British and Soviet spies on his heels, and closely monitored by Dromard, from the French intelligence services. The monocled Dromard is convinced that he can outfox his opponents, but difficulties accumulate: despite his plump appearance, Herr Schlumpf is a sly fellow; Corsica is teeming with treasure hunters from various nationalities; and all parties readily resort to unnatural alliances, brazen treachery, and strong-arm tactics. Who will get the treasure?
