Le souvenir du bonheur, c'est peut-être encore du bonheur… A Rochefort, en 1966, Jacques Demy a tourné "Les Demoiselles de Rochefort", avec les sœurs Deneuve-Dorléac. En 1992, le ville a fait une grande fête pour célébrer les 25 ans des Demoiselles. En mêlant les images de deux étés, d'une fête de cinéma à une fête en l'honneur du cinéma, Agnès Varda a tourné un documentaire à sa façon - coloré, souriant et un peu mélancolique - où l'on rencontre des Rochefortais pittoresques, des amis du film, Catherine Deneuve, Jacques Perrin et d'anciens figurants devenus grands, ainsi que les tilleuls de la Place Colbert. On y revoit comment se fait un film heureux !

(In 1967, the phenomenally successful director of the films Lola and the groundbreaking musical Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, Jacques Demy, arrived in the little port town of Rochefort and, together with his art director, decorated the whole town in cheerful, almost surreal fashion for the filming of his next musical, Les Demoiselles de Rochefort. This enormously well-received film, packed with songs which became integral to French popular culture, put the little town of Rochefort "on the map." Twenty five years later, a lot of things have changed except for the fond memories of the people who worked on the film, and of the townspeople. In this celebratory documentary, Agnes Varda, the wife of Jacques Demy, brings some of the players and extras together back in Rochefort for some reminiscences. In keeping with the thoroughly romantic nature of the musical, she also tells the story of how Les Demoiselles de Rochefort's extras found romance and had their lives changed by participating in its making. The present-day story is highlighted by clips from the earlier film, and from a documentary of the period showing how it was made.)

Une foire s'installe à Rochefort et crée l'effervescense dans la ville. Les soeurs Ganier participent a la fête et composent un ballet pour la kermesse. Entre deux répétitions, elles courent dans la ville à la recherche de l'amour. Delphine and Solange are two sisters living in Rochefort.

Delphine is a dancing teacher and Solange composes and teaches the piano. Maxence is a poet and a painter. He is doing his military service. Simon owns a music shop, he left Paris once month ago to come back where he fell in love 10 years ago. They are looking for love, looking for each other, without being aware that their ideal partner is very close… A film whose scenario is much less important than its feeling of euphory, according to the director Jacques Demy.In the little town Rochefort lives Delphine (Catherine Deneuve) and Solange Garnier (Françoise Dorléac), two musical twins that teach music and dance to kids. One day, Etienne (George Chakiris) and Bill (Groover Dale) arrive in town, and need the twins help with a song and dance-number. Also, the famous piano-player Andy Miller (Gene Kelly) comes to town to help an old friend.
