This French classic is one of Renoirs more darkly cynical films. It's story of a man trapped by his love for a femme fatale would go on to be the blueprint for every film noir(It was remade as Scarlet Street by Fritz Lang in 1945).Even it's international title of Lifes a Bitch could be viewed as the summary of noir. With the ever impressive Michel Simon playing the lead, La Chienne stands out as a true classic.

Maurice (Michel Simon) is a married cashier who meets Lulu (Janie Marese), a streetwalker. Their chance meeting results in Maurice falling in love with Lulu. She, however, is in love with her boyfriend-pimp, Dede (Georges Flamant). Together, Dede and Lulu plot ways to get Maurice to give cash to Lulu, mostly at the best of Dede.
