À l’occasion du suicide d’un des cousins, quatre familles se retrouvent et s’installent dans la maison Mac Gillis. À l’hôpital, Patrick ne se décide pas à mourir. Au centre, Pascale Mac Gillis. Elle a mal au ventre. Elle a l’impression que c’est à elle que revient la charge d’« accoucher » Patrick, de lui donner la mort - comme on donne vie à un nourrisson.
This dark study in living with death and its consequences marked the directorial debut of Arnaud Desplechin, who would go on to win critical acclaim with his subsequent full length films, La Sentinelle (1992) and Comment je me suis disputé (ma vie sexuelle) (1996). Although lacking in content and occasionally marred by pretentious dialogue, La Vie des morts is stylistically brilliant. The sombre cinematography conveys an intense mood of existentialist angst, which the repressed acting performances can only amplify. It is a thoughtful meditation on how human beings face up to their own mortality, not overly profound, but strangely compelling and hauntingly poetic

Mathias (Emmanuel Salinger) décide de quitter l'Allemagne pour revenir en France. Dans le train, il se fait menacer et insulter par un inconnu. Dans sa valise, il retrouve une tête réduite à la manière Jivaro. Le mystère de cette tête le tourmente…
Mathias, the son of diplomat in Berlin, is about to begin his training as a pathologist in Paris. Whilst crossing the Franco-German border on a train, he is singled out and harassed by customs officials. On his arrival in Paris, he is shocked to discover a mummified head in his luggage. Intrigued by the mystery, Mathias starts to use his skills to analyse the head and discovers that it belongs to a recently deceased Westerner. At the same time, he attempts to integrate with his fellow students, many of whom appear to have connections with the security services. Unwittingly, Mathias finds himself the instrument in a deadly vendetta between a former agent, Bleicher, and a man who assisted Soviet scientists in crossing the Iron Curtain.
