Michel Descombes, horloger entre deux âges, mène une vie tranquille dans le quartier de Saint-Paul à Lyon, entouré de ses amis et de son fils Bernard, qu'il élève seul. Un soir, les policiers font irruption chez lui, à la recherche de son fils, accusé du meurtre d'un garde de l'usine. Interloqué, Michel découvre, en dépit de leurs bonnes relations, l'abîme qui les séparait.
In the Saint-Paul district of Lyons, a middle-aged watchmaker, Michel Descombes, leads a peaceful and contented bachelor existence. He lives with his teenage son, Bernard, whom he brought up alone after his wife walked out on him many years ago. Michel’s well-ordered life suddenly falls apart when, one day, he receives an unexpected visit from the police. He is informed that his son has killed a night watchman at a factory, before going on the run with a young woman. As the police track his son, Michel struggles to come to terms with the terrible news and realises that he knew far less about his son than he thought…
