Rimasto vedovo, console britannico a Firenze si trova impreparato ad avere un buon rapporto con i due figlioletti. Il più piccolo ha tutte le sue attenzioni, l'altro ne soffre. Dopo Vittorio De Sica, L. Comencini è in Italia il regista che meglio sa capire (e far recitare) i bambini e per far questo occorre conoscerli bene. Lo dimostra anche questo melodramma, tratto da un mediocre romanzo strappalacrime (1869) di Florence Montgomery che, in virtù di stile e di una lucida strutturazione dei fatti e delle emozioni, Comencini trasforma in un grave affresco dei sentimenti, delicato e coinvolgente. Incompreso in Italia, ebbe un grande seppur ritardato successo all'estero.
A la mort de son épouse, sir Duncombe, consul de Grande-Bretagne à Florence, confie ses deux fils à une gouvernante. Il demande à Andrea, son fils aîné, de ne rien dire à son jeune frère Milo. Andrea, désespéré par la mort de sa mère, ne parviendra jamais à communiquer avec un père qui le croit insensible.
