Comedy/Fantasy/Musical | Director: Richard Elfman | Stars: Hervé Villechaize, Susan Tyrrell and Gisele Lindley

A mysterious door in the basement of the Hercules house leads to the Sixth Dimension by way of a gigantic set of intestine. When Frenchy slips through the door, King Fausto falls in love with her. The jealous Queen Doris takes Frenchy prisoner, and it is up to the Hercules family and friend Squeezit Henderson to rescue her. Not only is this Danny Elfman's first film as composer, it also marks the first appearance of his band Oingo Boingo, here billed as the Mystic Knights of Oingo Boingo.

FORBIDDEN ZONE follows the adventures of the almost indescribably weird Hercules family who have recently moved into a house whose basement contains the doorway to the 6th dimension. When their bathrobe-clad daughter Susan (who has been studying abroad in France, returning home with an outrageous French accent and now goes by the totally original nickname of "Frenchy") falls into the 6th dimension, all manner of looniness ensues. A tuxedoed frog-man, jockstrap wearing goons, animation that looks like it was done by an acidhead, a wonderful soundtrack that blends oddball rock and big band classics, the worst blackface makeup in film history, Squeezit "Chicken-boy" Henderson and his "sister" Renee, the funniest elementary school sequence in memory, Herve Villechaize as King Fausto, the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo and Danny Elfman as the devil himself…All this and more (!!!) in a ninety minute tour de force of unbridled imagination. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION

    Forbidden Zone (1982)

This is one of those movies that just has it all. If you're even a remote fan of cult cinema, then you have to own Forbidden Zone. Not just see, just own this movie, as you cannot sustain yourself on just one session. No, you'll need to watch this film time and again, in order to soak it all in and be able to appreciate its madness. Richard Elfman directs, Danny Elfman scores and offers a wild performance as Satan, then you add in The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, who play numerous roles within the flick. But then you have cult actress Susan Tyrell (Cry-Baby, Flesh & Blood), Fantasy Island star Herve Villechaize, Andy Warhol superstar Viva, and in a small role, the incomparable Joe Spinell (Cruising, Maniac). So the cast is impressive, the music is out of this world, and if you're tired of the same old cinema, this movie has more insanity than a mental institution. A frog dressed as a butler, a topless princess, one bizarre classroom, and The Kipper Kids, all rolled into one motion picture, plus an endless parade of other oddities. Even with all the random, out of control elements thrown together, Forbidden Zone is smooth and enjoyable. The jokes work, even the ones that weren't intentional, so you'll be laughing from start to finish. DVD Authority
