Some of the world's most extraordinary and spectacular experiences are only accessible by air. In this epic new series, pilot and former Royal Marine Arthur Williams flies viewers into some of the remotest parts of the planet to find out how people survive and thrive in places only the plane can reach.Arthur was paralysed in an accident seven years ago, and took up flying to rediscover his spirit of adventure. Now he braves tiny airstrips and outrageously dangerous flying conditions to reach the world's most spectacular remote places. In this first episode, Arthur flies to Nepal to see how small planes are transforming the nation's way of life. He takes to the air high above remote mountain valleys with local pilot Max. The dangers of mountain flying soon become apparent when Max begins to feel the effects of low oxygen, leaving Arthur to take the controls. Safely on terra firma, he meets the Parajuli family, whose fortunes are about be transformed by the arrival a major airstrip. Later, Arthur joins a flight into Lukla's airport, the world's most dangerous airstrip and a gateway to Everest. Carved out of a mountainside 50 years ago by Edmund Hillary, the short, steep runway gives pilots no room for error. Arthur meets the air traffic controllers overseeing the airport's hazardous landings before exploring tourist boom-town Lukla, finding an imitation Starbucks and 'Yakdonalds' in the once-remote Nepalese village. Finally, Arthur flies into Nepal's wild west, the most inaccessible part of the country. Here planes are the only way goods can reach the outside world. One commodity in particular is generating a deadly gold-rush: yarsagumba, a small mummified caterpillar found only on these slopes and marketed as an aphrodisiac. Arthur travels to the village of Dunai, where entire families are risking death on the mountainsides to harvest this strange Himalayan sex fungus.
