L'azione si svolge a Parigi nel 1865. Gasparre e Bastiano sono due trovatelli: l'uno è l'economo e il prefetto, l'altro il giardiniere di un istituto di orfanelle. A Bastiano viene l'idea di consultare una chiromante per rintracciare i suoi genitori. Apprende così di essere il figlio di un nobile e ricco duca: il suo posto è stato preso da un usurpatore, che abita nel palazzo di suo padre, insieme alla sua amante.

Bastiano, accompagnato da Gasparre, ch'egli nomina suo amministratore, prende possesso del palazzo, e sfugge miracolosamente ai vari tranelli dell'usurpatore e della donna, incontrando le avventure più inverosimili, durante le quali egli assume, a un certo punto, perfino le vesti di Napoleone I, mentre Gasparre scopre di essere figlio del boia di Parigi. La vicenda immaginata dà modo agli autori di fare la satira dell'aristocrazia, del duello, della guerra, della giustizia ecc. con frequenti allusioni alle condizioni attuali. A un certo punto ci accorgiamo che è stato un sogno: queste ridicole e tristi avventure Bastiano non le ha vissute, le ha sognate. Ma quando, svegliatosi dal sonno riprende insieme a Gasparre la solita vita, s'accorge che la realtà non è molto diversa dal sogno.

Storyline
France nineteenth century : Two middle aged orphans Gaspare and Battista find out (thanks to a soothsayer) that one is the offspring of the Hangman of Paris and the other is the son of a count. But it is only a dream of theirs…
