Gli sceneggiatori della Disney apportarono diversi aggiustamenti alla storia originale per adattarla meglio allo stile d'animazione e alle necessità. La trama, infatti, si discosta spesso dal romanzo di Collodi (il pescecane che inghiotte Pinocchio diventa una balena per esempio). Questa scelta gli costò inizialmente diverse critiche, soprattutto in Italia, patria del burattino. Dal punto di vista tecnico, Pinocchio è il film d'animazione della Disney più complesso, girato con tecniche di animazione mista. Costò a Walt Disney, all'epoca, la cifra considerevole di 2,3 milioni di dollari. Almeno inizialmente, però, il film non ebbe molta fortuna quanto al film precedente, e venne recuperato solo metà budget. Solo grazie alle successive riedizioni (1945, 1954, 1962, 1971, 1978, 1984 e 1992) Pinocchio venne rivalutato ed ebbe un grande successo, a tal punto che oggi l'americano medio considera Pinocchio una fiaba americana e nulla sa delle sue origini italiane. Molta fortuna mediatica, più volte citata, ha avuto l'idea dell'allungarsi del naso in caso di bugie. Analoga fortuna ha avuto la canzone portante del film (When you wish upon a star), che ha vinto l'Oscar nel 1941 ed è stata interpretata nel doppiaggio italiano del 1947 da Riccardo Billi; a partire poi dall'edizione del 1994, essendosi completamente restaurata la colonna italiana d'epoca, si è preferito ritornare alla versione di Riccardo Billi. La canzone è stata interpretata inoltre da Louis Armstrong, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole e Barbara Hendricks.
