Una commedia che parla dei diversi conflitti tra le comunità religiose del mediterraneo. Questi litigi avvengono per il semplice motivo che non si riesce a trovare il bambino per il presepe vivente; così il sindaco Cecco (Claudio Bisio) e Suor Marta (Angela Finocchiaro) chiedono aiuto alla comunità musulmana presente nell'isola.

Una piccola isola del Mediterraneo e un presepe vivente da realizzare come ogni anno per celebrare il Natale. Purtroppo quest'anno il Gesù Bambino titolare è cresciuto: ha barba e brufoli da adolescente e nella culla non ci sta proprio. A Porto Buio però non nascono più bambini da un pezzo ma bisogna trovarne un altro a tutti i costi: la tradizione del presepe è infatti l'unica "resistenza per non scomparire".

Il sindaco Cecco, fresco di nomina, vorrebbe chiederne uno in prestito ai tunisini che vivono sull'isola: peccato che fra le due comunità non corra buon sangue. Ad aiutarlo nell'impresa due amici di vecchia data: Bilal, al secolo Marietto, italiano convertito all'Islam e guida dei tunisini, e Suor Marta, che non ne vuole sapere di "profanare" la culla di Gesù. I tre si ritroveranno uno contro l'altro, usando la scusa della religione per saldare i conti con il proprio passato.

Un lama al posto del bue, un Gesù musulmano e un ramadan cristiano, una chiesa divisa in due e una madonna buddista: un presepe vivente così non si vedeva da 2000 anni nella piccola isola di Porto Buio.

Storyline
On a small island in the Mediterranean Sea the usual representation of the nativity is in danger because the child that used to play Baby Jesus is now grew. Moreover, on the island a baby hasn't born since a long time and it's necessary to find a new Baby Jesus. The mayor would like to "borrow" a child from the Tunisian community of the island, but between Italians and Tunisians there is bad blood. To help the mayor, there are Bilal, an Italian who converted to Islam and leads the Tunisian community, and Suor Marta, a nun who doesn't want to outrage the catholic tradition of the nativity.
