I coniugi Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender e Alicia Vikander) stanno facendo di tutto per avere un figlio, ma senza successo, quando trovano una neonata abbandonata in una barca alla deriva e la allevano in segreto come fosse loro. Ben presto quella creatura vivace e sempre bisognosa d’attenzione diventa la luce della loro vita, finché non scopriranno che la vera madre della piccola (Rachel Weisz) sono anni che la cerca senza riuscire a darsi pace. Tormentati dal dilemma se svelare il segreto perdendo così la figlia che ormai sentono come loro, la coppia inizierà a disgregarsi.

Storyline
A war weary man takes a job as a lighthouse keeper on an island for the solitude. He meets a beautiful young woman and they eventually marry. One day they see a small dingy with an infant and man inside floating in the ocean. They rush to rescue them only to find the man is dead. They struggle over the decision to report it and whether to keep the baby. It's only years later that they discover that the child still has a mother looking for her.
