A Strasburgo, nel 1800, mentre Napoleone è Console, il tenente Gabriel Féraud ferisce gravemente in duello il nipote del sindaco e il gen. Treillard incarica il tenente Armand d'Hubert di notificare al collega gli arresti domiciliari. D'Hubert compie il suo dovere mentre Féraud si trova nel salotto di Madame de Lionne; ne provoca l'ira e una sfida a duello. Vincitore, Armand si trova invischiato in un codice d'onore che lo vuole o assassino o cadavere., D'Hubert vorrebbe chiudere la partita, Anche perché è legato sentimentalmente ad Adèle, ma, come gli dice un amico, l'unica via d'uscita sarebbe di ottenere una promozione essendo proibiti i duelli tra ufficiali di diverso grado. Stranamente i due, trascinati dalle campagne napoleoniche, si trovano nel 1801 ad Augsburg, nel 1806 a Lubecca, nel 1812 in Russia, nel 1814 a Tours e nel 1816 a Parigi, di pari passo capitani, colonnelli, generali. Dopo la Restaurazione, essendosi sposato con Laura, Armand D'Hubert si trova in grado di intervenire a favore dell'avversario - bonapartista anche durante i Cento Giorni - e impedirne segretamente l'esecuzione capitale. Féraud lo raggiunge e lo sfida nuovamente. Questa volta Armand lo riduce alla propria mercè e, condannandolo a vivere, rompe finalmente la catena che lo legava ad uno stupido codice di malinteso onore.
