A British ship (which would seem a vessel, but is actually a spy ship), St. Georges, following the explosion of old ordnance impigliatosi accidentally in nets, sinks in the Ionian Sea, just off the coast of Albania , Carrying with it the entire crew. The vessel is a secret device, the ATAC, which allows you to decipher the codes to launch nuclear missiles that the Soviets and, if it fell into enemy hands, it could even be used to launch missiles against the same British allies.
A marine archaeologist, Sir Timothy Havelock, MI6 is sent to retrieve the device, but his wife is killed by a ruthless killer Cuban, Hector Gonzales, whose client wants to take possession of ATAC for resale to the Russians.

Una nave inglese (che sembrerebbe un peschereccio, ma in realtà è una nave spia), la St. Georges, a seguito dell'esplosione di un vecchio ordigno bellico impigliatosi accidentalmente nelle reti, si inabissa nel Mare Ionio, a poca distanza dalla costa albanese, trascinando con sé l'intero equipaggio. Nella nave si trova un dispositivo segreto, l'A.T.A.C., che permette di decifrare i codici di lancio dei missili nucleari sovietici e che, se cadesse in mani nemiche, potrebbe essere utilizzato per lanciare addirittura i missili alleati contro gli stessi inglesi.
Un archeologo marino, Sir Timothy Havelock, viene inviato dall'MI6 per recuperare il dispositivo, ma viene ucciso insieme alla moglie da uno spietato sicario cubano, Hector Gonzales, il cui mandante vorrebbe impossessarsi dell'A.T.A.C. per rivenderlo ai russi.
